the sum 2/x+1 + 7/x+2 can be expressed in the form ax+b/(x+1)(x+2). what are the values for a and b?

There are two ways to do this:

First way, by substitution of x=0 and x=1.

Substitute x=0:

Multiply through by 2

Substitute for :

Substitute x=1:

Multiply through by 6

So a=9 and b=11

---------------------

Second way:

Get LCD=(x+1)(x+2)

Compare that with

and obviously and
