: Please help me with this word problem (it is #16 on page 171: Jamie ran two laps around a track in 99 seconds. How long did it take him to run each lap if he ran the first lap at 8.5 m/s and the second at 8.0 m/s?
When I solved it I got 51 seconds for the first lap and 48 seconds for the second, which of course is incorrect because he ran faster on the first lap. I'm not sure what I did wrong.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Let x = time of the first lap
Let y = time of the second lap
Total time is 99 then x+y=99
he ran the first lap at 8.5 m/s and the second at 8.0 m/s?
distance of the first lap = distance of the second lap
then 8.5x=8y
