this is a function, P(x), divided by a binomial, (x-2)
__ multiplying by (x-2) will leave the function by itself on the left side
P(x) = 2x^3-4x^2+x^2-2x-2x+4-5
collecting like terms __ P(x) = 2x^3+3x^2-4x-1
