Question 161634: CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM:
Find an equation of the line satifying the given conditions.
Through(7,-8); parallel to -8.8x + 0.1y = -62
Answer by gonzo(654) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
equation you want to be parallel to is:
-8.8*x + .1*y = -62
multiply both sides of that equation to remove the decimals.
it becomes
-88*x + y = -620
adding -88*x to both sides of the equation gets
y = 88*x - 620
-----
that winds up being the slope intercept form of the equation.
slope intercept form of the equation is y = m*x + b
where m is the slope and b is the y intercept.
-----
since the equation you want is to be parallel to that line, it has to have the same slope, so the slope of your new equation will be 88.
-----
since the new equation passes through the point (7,-8), we can use that point to solve for b.
-----
the slope intercept form of the equation for the new line is
y = 88*x + b
a point that the line passes through is (7,-8).
so,
x = 7
y = -8
-----
replacing those values in the equation gets
-8 = 88*(7) + b
this winds up becoming
b = -624
-----
so the slope intercept form of the new equation becomes
y = 88*x - 624
it's got the same slope so it's parallel.
it passes through the point (7,-8)
original equation was
-8.8*x + .1*y = -62
translating that into the slope intercept form of the equation, it becomes
.1*y = 8.8*x - 62
multiplying it by 10 so it can be graphed in line with the new equation, it becomes
y = 88*x - 620
-----
i'll graph both equations.
equation 1 is y = 88*x - 620
equation 2 is y = 88*x - 624
looks like they'll be real close to each other.
hard to see on the graph, but the new equation passes through the point (7,-8)
if you can't see it, all you have to do is replace x with 7 and y with -8 in the equation and it should prove correct.
equation is y = 88*x - 624
substituting it becomes -8 = 88*7 - 624 becomes -8 = -8.
