Answer by nabla(475)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a+a^2=30
a^2+a-30=0
(a-5)(a+6)=0
so a=5 or a=-6
a must be an integer therefore a=-6 is excluded.
a=5 is the only possible number.

Check:
5+25=30.
yes

Let x= the integer.
x+x^2=30
x^2+x-30=0
(x+6)(x-5)=0
x=-6, x=5
