If x and y are zero, and they are both in the denominator, then this is undefined, because division by zero is undefined. Why? Get this:

12 divided by 3 is 4, right? Because 4 times 3 is 12.

14 divided by 2 is 7, right? Because 7 times 2 is 14.

25 divided by 5 is 5, right? because 5 times 5 is 25.

4 divided by 0 is 0, right? Because 0 times 0 is...(?!).


That is why anything besides zero over zero is an undefined value.
