: directions: solve the proportion and check for extraneous solutions..
5/m+1 = 4m/m
i came up with m=-1 and m= -5/4.. but when i plug them in to check it comes out as the numbers are not equal.
i cross multiply then used the x factor.. AUHH i don't know, i'm so confused :(
PLEASE SHOW HOW TO CHECK & SOLVE

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
solve the proportion and check for extraneous solutions..
5/m+1 = 4m/m
Cross-multiply to get:
5m = 4m(m+1)
5m = 4m^2+4m
4m^2-m = 0
m(4m-1) = 0
m = 0 or m = 1/4
------------------
m=0 is extraneous as zero cannot be in the denominator of the problem.
--------------------
Checking m= 1/4:
5/(5/4) = 1/(1/4)
4 = 4
------------------
