FOIL really is the best way to multiply binomials.
Look at this example:
(x+1)(x-3)=
first terms x*x
outer terms x(-3)
inner terms 1(x)
last terms 1(-3)
add them up:
If you encounter something like , it's just applying foil to (x-2)(x-2).
