Question 141073: Could you please show me how to factor the following polynomial? I need to know this to solve a rational expression:
x2+2x-5
Also, I can't seem to be able to solve the following problem, which it's part of the same lesson:
x+y over x2+2xy+y2 plus 3x over x-y minus 2x+3y over x+y

Thanks so much for your help,
Carlos

Answer by vleith(2983)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Factor
For simpler functions, you can factor them without using the quadratic equation.
This is not one of those simple one. So use the quadratic equation to find the 2 values for x

You solve for both values of x, then the factored form is (x + value1)(x+value2)

Given:

Now find a common denominator

Now expand he terms in the numerator using distribution. Then collect like terms and simplify if you can.
The rest is left for you
