: Boyle's law applied to the amount of gas used in a given experiment at a constant temp., states the pV=240 where p is pressure measured in kilopascals and V is volume measured in cubic centimeters. If a decrease in pressure of 1 kPa produces an increase in volume of 20cm^3, what was the original pressure on the gas?
i have:
pV=240
240-1=20
i dont think that is right...i dont get how to set up the problem though

pV=240 __ V=240/p

pV=(p-1)(V+20) __ pV=pV+20p-V-20 __ 0=20p-V-20

substituting for V __ 0=20p-(240/p)-20

multiplying by p __ 0=20p^2-20p-240 __ dividing by 20 __ 0=p^2-p-12

factoring __ 0=(p-4)(p+3)
