Question 121724: Can you please help me figure this one out? I have tried doing it but doesn't come out right.
y1=x, y2=6+x, y3= 3(x-4)/10x, and the sum of 8 times y1 and 4 times y2 equals y3. Show equation and solve.

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y1=x
y2=6+x
y3= 3(x-4)/10x,
the sum of 8 times y1 and 4 times y2 equals y3. Show equation and solve.
-------------
EQUATION:
8y1+4y2 = y3
Substitute and solve:
------------
8x + 4(6+x) = [3(x-4)/10x]
8x + 24+4x = [3x-12/10x]
12x + 24 = (3x-12)/10x
Multiply thru by 10x to get:
120x^2 + 240x = 3x-12
120x^2+237x+12 = 0
x = [-237 +- sqrt(237^2-4*120*12]/240
x = [-237 +- sqrt(50409.5195)]/240
x = [-237 +- 224.5195]/240
x = [-12.4805]/240 or x = 461.5195/240
x =-0.0520 or 1.923
