SOLUTION: Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether the given binomial is a factor or not of p(x). If not, give the remainder. 1. P(x)= x²-6x-16; x+2 2. P(x)= 3x²+8x-35; x+5

Question 1187193: Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether the given binomial is a factor or not of p(x). If not, give the remainder.
1. P(x)= x²-6x-16; x+2
2. P(x)= 3x²+8x-35; x+5

.

(1) Calculate P(-2).

In other words, substitute -2 instead of x into the polynomial and calculate its value.

If the value P(-2) is 0 (zero), then the given binomial is the factor.

If the value P(-2) is not zero, then this value is the remainder.

(2) Same with this case: calculate P(-5).

In other words, substitute -5 instead of x into the polynomial and calculate its value.

If the value P(-5) is 0 (zero), then the given binomial is the factor.

If the value P(-5) is not zero, then this value is the remainder.
