Let x = men
Let x+42 = women
x+(x+42) = 90
Remove parentheses
x+x+42 = 90
Collect the like terms
2x+42 = 90
Move constant to the right side of the equation and change its sign
2x = 90-42
Calculate the difference
2x = 48
Divide both sides by 2
x = 24
x+42
Use substitution
24+42 = 66
So the men were 24 and women were 66.
