Question 1147081: This question is from 5.4 Factoring a monomial from a polynomial functions.
Price of Dress
A dress is reduced by 10%, and then the sale price is reduced by another 10%.
a. Write an expression for the final price of the dress?
b. How does the final price compare with the regular price of the dress? Use factoring in obtaining your answer.

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a dress is reduced by 10% and then reduced by another 10%.
let x be the original price.
let y be the first sale price.
let z be the second sale price.

the first sale price is equal to x - .10 * x = .9 * x.
that makes y = .9 * x.

the second sale price is equal to y - .10 * y = .9 * y.
that makes z = .9 * y

you have:
original price is equal to x.
first sale price is equal to y = .9 * x.
second sale price is equal to z = .9 * y.

since y is equal to .9 * x, then:
your second sale price is equal to .9 * .9 * x.
that makes your second sale price equal to .81 * x.

your second price is your final sale price.

your final sale price is therefore equal to .81 * your original price.

an example:

assume your original price is 100 dollars.
your first sale price is equal to .9 * 100 = 90 dollars.
your second sale price is equal to .9 * 90 = 81 dollars.

the ratio of your final sale price to your original price is equal to 81 / 100 = .81.
