Factoring trinomials is like working backward from multiplying two binomials.

If you have in general x^2+hx+k and you want to factor it (IF it is factorable), then you want two numbers a and b so that a+b=h and ab=k. You would usually use your arithmetic knowledge to figure out what those values are.
