First thing you want to do hear is notice that the first two terms share a GCF and the last two terms share a GCF. So when you realize this you want to(step 1) group the first two terms together and group the second two terms together,(step 2) is to factor those two polynomials. After you factor you will have one common factor(x+y), which gets carried into your answer, and you also have two coefficients (3x, and +8), which you should put together to make the second binomial (step 3)
answer: 3x^2+3xy+8x+8y
3x^2+3xy +8x+8y step 1
3x(x+y) +8(x+y) step 2
(3x+8)(x+y) step 3
you can always check by distributing
