SOLUTION: I need some help describing and correcting the error. 3/x + 6/x+3 =8/x+1 LCD=x(x+3)(x+1) 3(x+3)(x+1)+6x(x+1)=8 3(x^2+4x+3)+6x^2+6x=8 3x^2+12x+9+6x^2+6x=8 9x^2+18x+1=0

Question 1107866: I need some help describing and correcting the error.
3/x + 6/x+3 =8/x+1
LCD=x(x+3)(x+1)
3(x+3)(x+1)+6x(x+1)=8
3(x^2+4x+3)+6x^2+6x=8
3x^2+12x+9+6x^2+6x=8
9x^2+18x+1=0
X=Square root of -18 plus or minus square root of 18^2-4(9)(1)/2(9)
=Square root -18 plus or minus square root 288/18 = -18 plus of minus 12 square root 2 / 18
X=-3 plus or minus 2 square root 2 / 3
thanks.

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3/x + 6/x+3 =8/x+1
LCD=x(x+3)(x+1)
---
Multiply both sides by the LCD to get::
3(x+3)(x+1)+6x(x+1)=8x(x+1)
----
3(x^2+4x+3) + 6x^2+6x = 8x^2+8x
-----------
9x^2 + 18x + 9 = 8x^2 + 8x
----
x^2 +10x + 9 = 0
----
(x+9)(x+1) = 0
---
Ans:: x = -9 or x = -1

If it's: 3/x + 6/(x + 3) =8/(x + 1), then you should get:
3(x + 3)(x + 1) + 6x(x + 1) = 8x(x + 3), and after combining like-terms, you should get: x^2 - 6x + 9 = 0
x = 3
BTW, your right side IS NOT 8. Instead, it's 8x(x + 3) = 8x^2 + 24x. That's your error.
