Question 1097328: A rectangular flower garden has a length that is
33
feet less than twice its width. A
4 foot4-foot
brick border is added around the garden, and the area of the garden and the brick border is a total of
285285
square feet. Find the dimensions of the garden without the brick border.

Let w and 2w-3 be the width and the length of the garden, respectively. Then:
(w+8)(2w+5)=285
2w²+21w-245=0
(2w+35 )(w-7)=0
w=-35/2 or 7
Using the positive value, we get dimensions of 7 ft. by 11 for the garden
