Question 109618: How would I set this word problem up? The help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Lets define a "part" here as a pint. (But we could just as easily define a "part" as a quart or a gallon or any liquid measure, for that matter).
6 gal=6*8=48 pints
Now we know that 50 pints is to 1 pint as 48 pints is to x. This is normally written as follows:
50/1=48/x multiply both sides by x (or cross-multiply)
50x=48 divide both sides by 50
x=0.96 pints
I would round it off to a pint!

Hope this helps---ptaylor
