Question 1093940: The larger of two numbers is six less than twice the smaller number. If the sum of the number is 42, find the numbers

Answer by CubeyThePenguin(3113)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = larger number
y = smaller number

x = 2y - 6
x + y = 42

Use substitution.

2y - 6 + y = 42
3y - 6 = 42
3y = 48
y = 16

The numbers are 26 and 16.
