We want to solve for b, correct? If so:
(3 + 2b + b^2) - (9 + 5b + b^2)
Simplify (3)-(9) = 6; (2b)-(5b) = -3b; b^2 and -b^2 cancel out, and you get:
-3 b - 6 = 0
-3b = 6
b = 6/-3
b = -2
