Explain what a local maximum of a function and how it may be different from the maximum value of the function.
Answer by robertb(5830) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A local maximum is a point of a curve where, in an open neighborhood of the function, it is the highest (a "peak"). The maximum value of the function, or its absolute maximum, can be thought of as the maximum of all the local maximums.
In real analysis there is more to this than what was mentioned above, involving symbols and rigorous definitions and all, so still do a little more research on your own.
