Question 102132: we are studying this now so i figured this questions corresponds to it. here it is
1. pick any number
2. double it
3. add 15
4. add original number
5. divid by 3
6. subtract original number
7. your answer is 5 why is that
the teacher wanted the answer inn an algebriac expression this is what i came up with.
x(2)+15+x
_________ - x =5
3
3x+15 - x =5
-----
3
x+5-x=5
5=5
this is why i did it. i wrote the problem out step by step then once i got the equation, i solved the problem step by step. when i say step by step i did #1 first, #2 second and so on. then i combined liked terms ( the x's) and they cancelled out which makes 5=5 a true statement.
but my question is, is this how you do this problem or did i do something wrong. if i did, what was it. please help.

No, you did it exactly right. You proved an identity which means that it holds for any x. So no matter what x you start with the answer will always be 5. Keep up the good work.
