One football is kicked into the air with an initial vertical velocity of 44 feet per second. Another football is kicked it to the air with an initial vertical velocity of 40 feet per second.
a. Which football is in the air for more time?
b. Justify your answer to part (a).
:
Use the equation h(t) = -16t^2 + 44t; -16t^2 is the downward force of gravity
When the ball hits the ground, h(t) = 0
-16t^2 + 44t = 0
Factor out -4t
-4t(4t - 11) = 0
two solutions
t = 0
and
4t = 11
t = 11/4
t = 2.75 seconds
:
You can do the same with this equation, and see which is in the air longer
-16t^2 + 40t = 0
