Robert has a rectangular garden that is currently 195 ft^2 and has the perimeter of 56 ft.
He wants to increase the size of his garden by 4 ft in both directions. What will be the area of his expanded garden?
:
Find the dimensions of the original garden
2L + 2W = 56
Divide by 2
L + W = 28
L = (28-W)
:
L*W = 195
(28-W) * W = 195
Arrange as a quadratic equation
-W^2 + 28W - 195 = 0
Multiply by -1
W^2 - 28W + 195 = 0
Factor this to:
(W-15)(W-13) = 0
two solutions
W = 13 then L = 15
W = 15 then L = 13
anyway the rectangle is 15 by 13
:
Add 4 ft to each dimension
19 * 17 = 323 sq/ft is the area of the expanded garden
