Question 960134: Hello! I don't understand what my lesson in is trying to explain by this:
In the lessons you learned that the slopes of parallel lines are equal. Line 1 has the slope of 1/2, so a line parallel to it has a slope of 1/2 as well. Lets apply some algebraic skills to this concept. Lets use the following example:
Line 1 is parallel to line 2. If the slope of L1 is x/2, and the slope of L2 is (3-2x)/2, find the value of x.
Knowing that parallel slopes are equal, you can create an algebraic equation by setting each given slope equal to each other. Then you can solve for the variable by cross multiplying.
x/2 = (3-2x)/2
2x = 2(3-2x)
2x = 6-4x
6x = 6
x = 1

Wouldn't the two lines be 1/2 and 2/2 (1)? How would they be parallel then?
I would appreciate any help in explaining this. Thank you!!

Multiply both sides by 2.

So then the left hand side is,

and the right hand side is
