The next part of the question says the point (-2,r) is on the line AB & I've to find the value of r? I do not know how to! Help please

The equation of the line that has AB as a segment you have correctly determined to be
y = 3x -8
we are given point (-2, r) and asked to determine r
substitute -2 for x in the equation of your line
y = 3*(-2) -8
y = -14, therefore
r = -14
