A construction company builds a rectangular fenced in area with a perimeter of 46m. The length is 5m more than the width. Find the dimensions of the fence.
I know it's easy, but I can't remember how to do it.
This is what I tried:
2x+2y+5=46

Length is 5 more than the width:
L = W + 5
Perimeter = P = 2L + 2W = 2(W+5) = + 2W = 46
Solve for W:
W + 5 + W = 23
2W = 18
W = 9
So the width is 9 and the length is 14

You are sort of on the right track but you need to make two equations.
Set-Up

W = width
Equation 1:
Equation 2:
Solution:

Plug (W + 5) into equation 1 for L
Equation 1:
Simplify
Combine like terms
Subtract 10 from both sides
Divide both sides by 4

Now plug 9 into equation 2 for W
Equation 2:
