Question 1122098: point b splits a segment ac with ratio ab:bc=2:1. point d splits a segment ab with the ratio ad:db=3:2. what is the ratio for ad:dc?
Answer by greenestamps(13203) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Did you try drawing a diagram and figuring this out on your own? Or is it easier for you just to ask somebody else to do the thinking for you?
There are innumerable ways you could solve this problem; you probably want some sort of diagram to help you see the path to the answer.
Here is one suggestion....
Use a number line; let A=0 on the number line. Then to make AB:BC = 2:1, let B be 2 and C be 3. Then AB=2 and BC=1, so AB:BC = 2:1, as required.
Now place D on AB so that AD:DB = 3:2. That makes AD 3/5 of AB and DB 2/5 of AB. What number is point D, knowing that AB=2 and AD is 3/5 of AB?
Now use the coordinates of the points on the number line to determine the ratio AD:DC.
