If I am understanding you correctly, you will use the formula:
EF=1/2(CD+AB)
AB would be either the top or bottom line of the trapezoid, CD would be the top,EF would be the distance between the sides; ex.
AB=14
EF = 10
Substitute these values;
EF=1/2(CD+AB)
10=1/2(CD+14)
20=CD+14
6=CD
