If you are allowed to repeat a previously used letter than there are 2 ways to choose the first letter, 3 ways to choose the middle letter, and 2 ways to choose the last letter. So 2 times 3 times 2.
If you are NOT allowed to repeat a previously used letter, then 2 times 3 times 1.
