Question 880720: Please help! We, parents and child, are stuck. If you are knitting a sweater and you want it to have 4 different colored stripes. You have 13 different colors of yarn. How many sweaters could you make?
We don't need the answer- but just to tell if it is a permutation or a combination problem. We are at a standstill.
(I think it is combination- but I also wouldn't bet much on my math skills) The other 2 believe it is permutation.
We have valid arguments for either. HELP! There is no order specified, that is why I think combo...

If order mattered, say for example "red, green, yellow, blue" was different from "green, red, yellow, blue", then you'd use a permutation

If order doesn't matter, then you'd use a combination.

-------------------------------------------------------

I think order doesn't matter since as long as the colors are together, it doesn't matter how you rearrange them. So that's why I think you'll use a combination.

If you restrict things by saying "red, green, yellow, blue" was different from "green, red, yellow, blue", then you'd use a permutation, but it doesn't have that requirement mentioned.

However, the argument could go either way in my opinion because of missing info or poorly stated instructions.
