Question 86700: May you help me in solving this problem? I'm afraid I don't even know what formula to use. I can't even find this section in my text book. Thanks!
Use these figures for 1999 resident U.S. population by age to answer this question:
AGE ------POPULATION (In Thousands)
0-19 ------75,791
20-39 ----81,004
40-59 ------62,383
75-84 -----11,145
85 and older ----3,628
A.) Find the Probability that the resident is under the age of 20.
B.) Find the Probability that the resident is in the 20-39 or 60-74 age group.
Answer by Flake(45) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A.) Find the Probability that the resident is under the age of 20
----Step#1: Understand the question.
What this is asking is "out of the "total population", what is the percentage (%) of people "under the age of 20"?
----Step#2: find "Total Population", add the all the people from age 0 to 85 and older.
Total population = 233,951
----Step#2: find number of people "under the age of 20".
Only the people in the age group of 0-19 is under 20yr old.
So number of people "under the age of 20" is 75,791
----Step#3: Find the percentage (%) of people "under the age of 20" out the "total population".....75,791/233,951 = 32.4%
---------------
B.) Find the Probability that the resident is in the 20-39 or 60-74 age group.
----Step#1: Understand the question.
What they're asking is, out of the total population, what's the percentage (%) of people who are either 20-39 or 60-74 years old.
So a person you who is 25 should be in this group. A person who is 70 should also belong in this group.
What you do is added the people in both the 20-39 and 60-74 groups and devide by the total population
