Since order does not matter, this is a combination. I am assuming you may use a calculator (TI-83 or TI-84) for this problem, as actually doing the math would take up several pages of work as you would solve one equation with 30, then solve with 29, then 28, all the way to 1.
Now, as far as getting the variables:
n= TOTAL number of objects, in this case 30 (students)
r= number of objects being selected, in this case 6 (selected for the front row)
The calculator steps are:
type 30 (which is n)
press MATH
scroll right to PRB
scroll down to #3 (nCr)and press enter
type 6 (which is r)
press enter
The answer is 593775.
Hope it helps. If order did matter you would use the same steps on the calculator, except you would choose #2 (nPr), which gives the answer for a permutation.
