There are 4 choices for Mayor (including choosing nobody), 5 choices for councilwoman, and 4 choices for DA, so:



But you have to subtract the one disallowed possibility that is counted above, namely not voting for anyone at all.

A citizen can vote for mayor in 4 ways..( any one of 3 candidates or no one )

similarly, for city councilwoman .........5 ways.
for district attorney........... 4 ways.

total ways = 4*5*4 = 80
but, here there is one way when he didn't vote for any position..
so, subtract 1 from total 80.

total no. of ways =79
