Question 143259: Make an organized list of all possible four-letter permutations of the letters in STEP?
I know by calculating that it should be 4*3*2*1=24 - however I only come up with STEP, TEPS, PSTE, EPST - how do I find all 24 words?

Start with the word itself:
STEP. Then change the 3rd letter with the last
STPE. Then change the 2nd letter with one of the others
SETP. Then swap the last two again
SEPT. Change the 2nd letter one more time
SPTE. And swap the last two again
SPET. Giving you all six combinations that start with S.

Repeat the process beginning with one of the other letters. Repeat twice more with the remaining letters. That gives you 4 sets of 6 = 24.
