35. P(n,4) = 40[P(n-1,2)]
Using definition of P(n,r)= n!/(n-r)! you get:
n!/(n-4)! = 40[(n-1)!/(n-3)!]
Keep in mind n! = n(n-1)! and (n-3)!=(n-3)(n-4)!
Cancel where you can to get:
And you get:
n = 40[1/(n-3)]
Cross-multiply to get:
n^2-3n-40=0
Factor to get:
(n-8)(n+5)=0
Solve for n (Keep in mind that n must be positive).
n = 8

Use the definition of P(n,r)
n!/(n-4)! = 3[n!/(n-3)!]
Cancel n! of both sides.
Remember (n-3)!= (n-3)(n-4)!, so cancel (n-4)! of both sides to get:
