Why ? What are you looking for?
Improper fractions and mixed numbers both are rational numbers. "Improper Fraction" has absolute value of numerator which is greater than or equal to absolute value of denominator. Mixed Number is the sum of a whole number and a proper fraction. A proper fraction is always less than either a mixed number or a proper fraction.
There is no "Which do you prefer" and "why". The kind you "prefer" depends on what you need with the number.
