.

(1)   The difference between LCM and HCF

    LCM is Least Common Multiple.

    For example, LCM of numbers 20 and 30 is 60. LCM(20,30) = 60.

    HCF is Highest Common Factor.

    For the numbers 20 and 30, HCF is 10. HCF(20,30) = 10.

(2)   The difference between Multiples and Factors

    The number 10 has multiples 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and so on . . .

The number 10 has factors 2 and 5.

Multiples are products usually using a set of whole numbers for one of the factors.

Factors go together to make products but do not need to be whole numbers.

A multiple of a given number is any number that can be obtained by multiplying the given number by a positive integer. For example, the multiples of 5 are

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, ... (the list goes on forever...)

A factor is a number which divides evenly into the given number. For example, the factors of 24 are

1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 (and no more -- unlike the list of multiples)

Then to use tutor @ikleyn's examples, to find the LCM (least common multiple) of 20 and 30, we list the multiples of 20 and the multiples of 30 and look for the smallest (least) number that is in both lists:

20: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, ...
30: 30, 60, 90, 120, ...

The smallest number in both lists is 60; the LCM of 20 and 30 is 60.

And to find the GCF (greatest common factor), we list the factors of 20 and 30 and find the largest (greatest) number that is in both lists:

20: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20
30: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30

The largest number in both lists is 10; the GCF of 20 and 30 is 10.

I hope this helps further....
