Question 158569: Hi! I hope this is an acceptable use of this website. My husband has recently added a hydrogen generator to his engine to increase his gas mileage. He used to get 11 miles to a gallon but now he gets 18 miles to a gallon.
We can't seem to figure out how to come up with the percentage of increase that is. We will need to use this formula a lot since he will be building one for my SUV next and is considering helping others with them. It feels silly to not be able to figure this out. He used a calculator to come up with an answer and I used longhand division and multiplication by hand and the weird thing is that we came up with different answers. I double-checked mine so I know mine is correct but since I'm not sure I used the correct formula, I still feel unsure of my answer.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Susan

Question 160956: I am a parent that is homeschooling. This is a word problem that I have the answer too, but I am not quite sure how they came up with the ratio that they used to solve the answer. Question states:
There are two books that have 2,400 total number of pages. The ratio of pages is 3 to 5. How many pages are in each book?
They answer key states that the proportion is 3/8 = x/2400. The 3/8 doesn't make sense. But the answer is 900 pages for 1 book and 1500. The answers make sense and they are a 3 to 5 ratio but where did the 3 to 8 ratio come from?

Question 161861: What percent of 75 is 9?
Lets use proportions, on one side we will consider the numbers and on the other we will consider the percents. Now it is important to remember that the complete quantity (not the part) is always consider 100% and a fraction can be seen as piece/whole
so:
9/75 = x/100 (left represent the quantity in amount; right represents the same quantity in percent terms-- 9 is a piece of 75 as x% is a piece of 100%)
9/75=x/100
(100)* (9/75) = (x/100) * 100
900/75= 100x/100
12=1x or
12 percent

The seats in a theater are divded intow two sections. Section A has 15 rows Section B has 13 rows. There are 10 seats in aq row. How many seats are in the theater?
Jamal solved the problem using this method. He multiplied to find the seats in each section, and then added to find the total:
Section A 10 x 15=150
Section B 10x13=130
Total seats (10x15)+(10x13)=150 +130=280
Rosa thinks her method is correct. She added to find the total number of rows and then multiplied by the number of seats per row.
Rows in A and B 15 +13
Total seats 10(15+13)=10x28=280
