10420. Find the number of females in the town.

Let M be males now and let F be females now.
Thus
M + F = 9500
After the increase, we have
1.08M + 1.12F = 10420
Since we want females, let's solve the first equation for M and substitute it into the second equation.
M = 9500 - F
1.08(9500 - F) + 1.12F = 10420
10260 - 1.08F + 1.12F = 10420
Simplifying, we get
.04F = 160
and
F = 4000
