Every group of 8 has 3 licorice and 5 toffee, and there are (280/8) 35 groups of 8, so there are(35 x 3) 105 licorice and (35 x 5) 175 toffee.
105 licorice + 175 toffee = 280 sweets total.
.
-OR-
.
L=licorice; T=toffee=(5/3)L
L+T=280 Substitute for T.
L+5/3L=280
8/3L=280
L=(3/8)(280)=105 ANSWER 1: there are 105 licorice.
T=(5/3)L=(5/3)105=175 ANSWER 2: There are 175 toffee
