Question 970428: I use 3/8 of my money to buy shoes and 1/5 to buy food. I have $180 left. how much did i have initially?
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x=amount you had.
You used (3/8) and then (1/5)= common denominator 40 = (15+8)/40=(23/40) spent.
That means you have (17/40) left, which equals 180
Multiply by (40/17) and the original amount is (180)*(40/17)=423.53
423.53 (3/8)=158.82
423.53 (1/5)=84.71
The total is 243.53, which when subtracted from the original, leaves $180.
Note. I am assuming he spent 3/8 of his money on shoes and 1/5 of the original money (not the money left) on food.
