Two quantities P and Q are in the ratio 2 : 3. If P is reduced by 1, the ratio is 1/2. Find the values of P and Q.
p/q=2/3 given
3p=2q (1)
p-1/q=1/2
2p-2=q(2) by substitions in (1_)
3p=2(2p-2)
3p=4p-4
-p=-4 or p=4
q=2p-2
q=2x4-2=6
p=4 and q=6
