let x be the multiple of girls to boys in year 6
14x + 13x = 297
27x = 297
x = 11
we have the following solutions
number of girls in year 6 = 14*11 = 154
number of boys in year 6 = 13*11 = 143
check our answers
154 + 143 = 297
297 = 297
