Say we have 3 friends: A, B, C
A:B:C = 1:2:5 which means
Friend A has 1x dollars
Friend B has 2x dollars
Friend C has 5x dollars
for some unknown number x. The sum must add to $12,000, which means
1x+2x+5x = 12000
8x = 12000
x = 12000/8
x = 1500
-------------------------------------------------------
1x = 1*1500 = 1500
2x = 2*1500 = 3000
5x = 5*1500 = 7500
-------------------------------------------------------
Friend A gets $1,500
Friend B gets $3,000
Friend C gets $7,500
Check: 1500+3000+7500 = 12000
