Question 877169: Alcohol and water are mixed in the ratio of 1:4 by volume. Volume of the solution is 600 cm3, volume of alcohol is 120 cm3 and volume of water is 480 cm3. How much alcohol must be added to the solution so that the ratio of alcohol to water in the solution becomes 1:3 by volume?
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = amount of alcohol added

120/480 = 1/4

(120+x)/480 = 1/3

3(120+x) = 1*480

360+3x = 480

3x = 480-360

3x = 120

x = 120/3

x = 40

You need to add 40 cm^3 of alcohol.
