Find how far the account walks and how far he rides the bus.

the total dist is given as 25 mi, therefore:
(25-w) = distance by bus

Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
walk time + ride time = 3 hrs
+ = 3
Multiply by 40, clear the denominators
10w + 25 - w = 40(3)
9w = 120 - 25
9w = 95
w = 95/9
w = 10.56 miles walked
