If the ratio is 7:5 this means for every 7 males there are 5 females, yes?
In simplest terms, this means in a group of 7 males and 5 females, there are 12 in total. (7+5=12)
To put this into a fraction, of the runners are male and of the runners are female.
Now, to take a a fraction of a whole number, multiply the fraction by 144.
Amount of males:

Amount of females:

So, there are 60 females in the race.
To check your answer:
Ratio = males/females
84/60 = 7/5=7:5

Let x represent  the constant of proportionality

Question States***there are 144 runners

 7x + 5x = 144

    12x = 144

      x = 12

 84 males and 60 females
