Let's find a common denominator first. What number do both 10 and 6 go into? I can see right off that 30 will work (it doesn't HAVE to be the lowest common denominator; you can always reduce later).
= how many 30ths? Multiply top and bottom by 3 to get
= how many 30ths? Multiply top and bottom by 5 to get
Add them together

If he spends , then there will be 30-14, or left over.
What number can you reduce that fraction to?
